Farming News - Liquid feeds could aid beef production

Liquid feeds could aid beef production

“Look to liquid feeds,” says KW nutritionist Mark Scott who is urging producers to look at their options this coming winter.

With the ever increasing price of feed, especially on the back of a poor harvest, livestock producers could turn to liquid feeds as a solution to reducing costs.

“Since the start of the year, we’ve seen energy feed costs rise 15-25%,” he states. “But the molasses-

and distillery syrup-based liquid feeds are the outstanding exception, with prices just 7% higher than

last winter.

“The high protein liquid feeds also offer better value than rapemeal, with Regumaize44 and

ReguPro50, for example, costing around 50-55p/100g crude protein (CP) compared to 80p/100g CP

for rapemeal. That’s a saving of up to 38%!

“Factor in the known liquid feed benefits of increased ration palatability, higher feed intakes, reduced sorting and additional sugars to drive rumen function and help counter low energy second cut silages, and it’s an option few can afford to ignore this winter.”

It’s fairly evident from farms across the UK that both grain and silage quality will be down on the year and by looking to liquid feeds, producers could increase daily liveweight gains (DLWG) and finish stock faster.
