Livestock prices roundup
Livestock prices remained firm this week with cattle still in tight demand. According to the latest AHDB report, prime cattle slaughtering’s were estimated to be down 500 head on the week and 15% lower than they were in the corresponding week a year ago.
Both the average steer and heifer price eased a penny on the week while young bulls were almost 4p/kg cheaper.
At Newark livestock market yesterday (19 September) 645 cattle and 730 sheep went through the live auction system with young bulls going to 233.5p at £1775.72 and steers at 239.5p reaching £1796.87. Heifers reached £1428.95, equalling 244.5p while Lambs sold to 190.0p equalling £85.50.
Deadweight lamb prices have eased somewhat more as supplies start to increase owing to better weather and finishing conditions. GB estimated slaughtering’s in the week were 20,000 head up on the week and despite slaughtering’s being down on the year so far, they have started to creep back up above 2011 levels.
