Young people aware of dairy benefits according to study
2 June 2011
The Dairy Council has welcomed the results of a survey which revealed the overwhelming majority of young people believe that milk holds nutritional benefits.
The Dairy Council commissioned UK-wide research among 1,001 12-20 year olds across Britain to assess their attitudes to milk.
The research found:-
85% of 12-20 year olds surveyed believe “low fat milk is a healthy food”
99% believe “milk contains calcium”
98% believe “calcium is needed for strong teeth”
69% believe “semi-skimmed milk is a low-fat food”
Dr Judith Bryans, Director of the Dairy Council, said, “The results of this research underlines the clear understanding that children and young people have that milk, particularly low-fat or semi-skimmed milk, is a healthy and nutritious food.
“These finding also reflect the results of other recent research in the UK which shows that adults too believe overwhelmingly that milk and dairy products are key parts of a healthy, balanced diet.”
Nearly half of the 12-20 year olds surveyed were aware of milk advertising, mainly through television but also through poster advertising, magazines and the internet.
