NSA Wales/Cymru Next Generation Ambassadors strengthen industry insight through Welsh agri-tech visits

The National Sheep Association (NSA) Wales/Cymru Region Next Generation Ambassadors alumni group recently enjoyed an inspiring programme of visits designed to expand industry knowledge and strengthen professional networks across Wales.

The two-day event began at Kepak’s flagship site in Merthyr Tydfil, where alumni representing a wide range of agricultural experience learned more about Kepak as a family business and its extensive operational scale. During a guided factory tour, the group engaged with staff on topics such as livestock procurement, animal health and welfare, food safety controls, customer demands, product traceability back to farm, sustainability practices and the role of EID/cattle passports.

The group then travelled to Aberystwyth for the next stage of the convention with a visit to the Wales Veterinary Science Centre. The Ambassadors received a full tour and an update on how NSA Cymru Region funding has supported developments in Enferplex testing - a technology set to play a vital role in tackling iceberg diseases and improving disease prevention across the livestock industry.

In the evening, the Ambassadors welcomed Prys Morgan from Kepak, who entertained the group with engaging stories from his early days in agriculture and his time within the business.

Day two featured a visit to AberInnovation, offering insight into the cutting-edge research facilities available to support new businesses. One highlighted business was LanoTech, founded by Clodagh Weingart. LanoTech is leading innovative trials using lanolin - the natural grease in wool - as a sustainable alternative to soy and vegetable oils in animal feed. With early findings indicating improved energy content and stability, this initiative aims to build a circular economy, boosting farmers’ incomes by improving the value of British wool and reducing agriculture’s carbon footprint.

The visit concluded with a presentation from Mark Needham and a tour of IBERS, showcasing how drone technology is being used to enhance grassland and previewing the exciting future potential of agriculture.

Alongside the Ambassador activities, NSA Cymru Region has participated in a series of farm visits, hosted by Farming Connect. The final visit was hosted by NSA Cymru Region Chair, Caryl Hughes, who shared her experience trialling boluses for the first time and the positive impact on the performance of her Welsh lambs. These events were well attended and provided valuable opportunities to connect with members old and new.
