Gleadell fertilizer report: prices firm, concerns arise over lack of competition

The latest report from Gleadell grains shows prices for most fertilizer types is on the rise, as demand increases. The market report comes at a time when farming industry representatives have criticized the lack of competition in the fertilizer market. Industry spokespeople and Scottish MPs have questioned the concentration of power in the fertilizer markets, claiming this has precipitated a rise in costs.

UREA

International and domestic Urea prices have gained further strength with market prices moving up by almost 25% since December. Product is not in abundance in the UK, with most ports reported as being out of product and awaiting new cargoes to arrive, so this will help support prices in the short term.

AMMONIUM NITRATE

High stocks of Ammonium Nitrate in UK port warehouses have now started to diminish and prices have moved upwards in line with replacement values. GrowHow UK are still to announce new terms for February AN.

PHOSPHATES 

The market has found some stability with demand from Latin America supporting prices. That aside, January is still considered as the 'off season' for a lot of markets and, in the UK, some blenders/importers have been reducing prices to clear stock before buying in replacement.

POTASH

Potash demand has increased in Europe and the UK over the past week, and prices are now firming in advance of the spring season where business still has to be concluded. All blenders in the UK have increased prices during the last week.

SULPHUR

The European/UK Sulphur market is firm with demand increasing significantly since the New Year.
