French farmers torch Spanish pork shipment

A Spanish farm union has reacted strongly to news of fresh attacks on trucks carrying pork products into France.

Valencia-based union La Unio de Llauradors i Ramaders issued an appeal to EU authorities last week in response to an incident in Northern France where disgruntled farmers raided and burned a shipment of pork from Spain.

On Sunday 8th March, at least three French farmers raided a truck carrying pork from Burgos, northern Spain. The farmers burned the vehicle and its load in a car park in Landivisiau, Brittany.

Farmers in the region have been angered by the collapse in pork prices, and some have claimed Spanish meat undercuts French product.

Unio de Llauradors i Ramaders spokesperson Sergi Puchol said Spanish producers are also suffering from the effects of falling pork prices. However, the union blames the ongoing Russian ban on food imports from the EU and “abuses and low prices imposed by an oligopoly of large retailers” for the price collapse.

Puchol added, “Hopefully this is an isolated incident; because otherwise we may have to act against milk and other French products that are imported [into Spain].”

The Unio spokesperson urged EU officials to pressure French authorities to respond to the incident, and prevent any further raids, adding that “Noone attacks French trucks in Spain” though France exports many agricultural products into the country.
