Farming advisory group rises from the ashes

The Wales branch of the Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group (FWAG), which entered administration last November, has reformed as an independent advisory service.

Farming groups and policy makers, including agriculture minister Alun Davies, have welcomed the group’s rebirth, which they said will be of particular import given the need to move towards more sustainable and wildlife-friendly methods of farming.

Although the national FWAG organisation could no longer sustain itself, FWAG Cymru was apparently functioning well when the parent group went into administration last year. Although staff were made redundant most carried on unpaid until the new independent body was established, supported by Welsh farming and countryside organisations.

The official launch of the new FWAG Cymru took place in Denbighshire this week. Members of the newly resurrected organisation said its work will be especially relevant this year, given the reworking of the Glastir agri-environment scheme.
