EU Council choose Juncker to lead the future of the Union
Towards the end of last week, EU member state leaders meeting in the European Council reached a decision on their candidate for President of the European Commission.
The Council chose to propose that Jean Claude Juncker replaces Herman Van Rompuy as President of the European Commission. Their proposal will now go before the EU Parliament.
UK Prime Minister David Cameron forced a vote on the appointment on Friday, which he lost by 26 votes to two. Mr Cameron's opposition to Juncker is the result of the presidential candidate's support for closer political relationships between member states. Only Hungary's representative backed the Prime Minister.
Speaking about the mainstreaming of Eurosceptic sentiments at the Cereals Event earlier this month, NFU president Meurig Raymond said that despite widespread "frustration" with some aspects of EU policy, the UK was unquestionably better off as part of the Union.
