Bayer to offer due diligence on pest control
LAMMA 2014 will see Bayer on hand to help make due diligence an easier task for farmers by offering advice to those who are seeking a preventative pest control approach.
As part of the showcase for their well-known grain protectant K-Obiol®, Bayer is offering a free pest identification poster to all visitors to their stand.
Bayer’s National Account Manager for Rural Hygiene, Ken Black advises that over the course of the spring, Growers should begin to think about their grain storage strategy for 2014 and develop an integrated approach to insect pest control.
“Our new K-Obiol® poster features 14 of the most common beetles, moths and weevils, likely to be found in a grain store,” explains Ken. “As well as depicting an image of each, we’ve also included a short description, detailing their behavioural characteristics, breeding habits, and the effect their infestation has on the stored product. These posters can be pinned up in the farm office or grain store and offer an ‘at-a-glance’ reference for grain store insect pest control.”
He adds that an ability to quickly identify which pests you’re dealing with offers a key advantage in eventually controlling them.
Adjacent to the pest identification section of the poster, are two flow charts that plot the appropriate use of the two K-Obiol® formulations, according to whether action needs to be taken before or after harvest.
K-Obiol® EC25 is designed to treat the fabric of the building prior to the grain coming into store. The poster promotes a ‘best practice’ approach prior to grain storage including a thorough clean out of the grain store and the use of traps to monitor for the presence of insects. Should insects be present, it is recommended that the fabric of the building is treated with an application of K-Obiol® EC25 to control the existing threat and provide up to 2 months protection prior to harvest.
K-Obiol® ULV6 is a ready to use formulation that can be applied to the grain prior to it entering the store. The poster illustrates that if pests were present in the previous year, then an application of K-Obiol® ULV6 is recommended upon intake. This will provide up to 12 months protection, but continuous monitoring is required to avoid re-infestation.
Anyone wishing to take home one of the posters and the K-Obiol® guide book or just discuss grain store treatment in general should head to the Bayer stand at this years show.
