Will you be sowing less OSR this autumn?
The loss of neonicotinoid-based seed treatments for oilseed rape has raised the bar for establishing this crop.
Limagrain argues that Cultivations will become more important than ever when establishing OSR, not only to conserve moisture but to encourage the crop out of the ground as quickly as possible to avoid flea beetle damage, so it may be a good time to review cultivation techniques.
This approach, although necessary, will inevitably introduce time constraints and reduce the window for establishing the crop.
Variety choice will be important too as autumn vigour will encourage quicker establishment. But agronomists caution that increasing the seed rate is not the right approach. This will lead to crops more prone to lodging and less able to intercept light during flowering and pod fill.
So how has all this affected your decision to grow OSR this autumn? Let us know by filling in the survey.
Farming Online's Autumn OSR Sowing Survey can be found on the homepage. The survey is incredibly straightforward and quick to take.
All results are anonymous, but the independent survey will give a picture of how recent policy decisions and the loss of certain crop protection prducts are affecting growers' decisions this year.
