Don’t close the door on wheat crops. That’s the advice of Frontier’s Charlie Whitmarsh as crops in some areas rapidly move towards full ear emergence.

Mr Whitmarsh points out that at £180/t even a low yielding crop can achieve returns of £1080/ha. “Although the drought has limited potential we shouldn’t overlook the fact that margin is there to be had. Go back to when wheat was £100/t and to get the same return crops would have to hit the 10t/ha to get the same return. I can understand the disappointment felt by growers this season but in my view it will be essential to protect what you have.”
