Wheat Bulb Fly hatch increases

Wheat Bulb Fly Update

The geographical spread of egg-hatch has increased from last week with hatch commencing at the Malton site in North Yorkshire. There are first signs of plant invasion in Cambridgeshire, but this is at a very low level and these larvae are at the first instar stage.

When applied as a soil insecticide, Dursban*WG at 1.0kg/ha will give good control for 6-8 weeks under normal conditions which means that most larvae will be controlled if they hatch over a period of time. On organic soils, repeat application may be necessary. Optimum conditions for activity occur when soil temperatures are above 5 degrees.

What does this mean for you?

Use local assessment and Risk Assessment Charts to identify fields at high risk. Be prepared to apply Dursban WG at 1.0 kg/ha in 200 to 1,000 litres per hectare of water to fields in the highest risk category at egg-hatch.  In any late drilled, struggling, backward or particularly thin crops it should be worth considering an application of Dursban WG at the first available opportunity as tiller survival will be very important in these crops.

We have recently updated the tank mix compatibility list for Dursban WG to include more herbicides and nutrients.  Find out more about Dursban WG tank mixes

If necessary, Dursban WG can be applied to frosty ground but should NOT be tank mixed in this situation. Avoid tank-mixing when frosts are forecast.

An interval of 14 days must be observed between applications of Dursban WG and Broadway* Star, regardless of weather conditions.
