Solstice
is still the favourite with millers and has a good export market but disease resistance is only moderate and susceptible to both yellow and brown rust.
Gallant
has the yield advantage over Solstice and is an early maturing variety but as with Solstice it is susceptible to both yellow and brown rust.

Group 2
Cordial
– high quality and good export market. Early to mature but only moderate yield and disease resistance.

Group 3
Invicta –
a new edition with good disease resistance although a bit weak on mildew. Worth a look at.
Claire
– an old favourite especially for early sowing but lowest yielder in the group.
Scout
– a Claire replacement as suitable for early sowing. Good disease resistance if a bit weak on mildew.
Warrior
– OK for cake and biscuit but no good for distilling. Good disease resistance.

Group 4

Oakley
is still the highest yielding variety but its yellow rust rating means that it is rapidly losing favour. Don’t grow too much!
Beluga
– good yield and favoured for distilling but watch brown rust. Good standing power and good potential second wheat.  One to try.
Viscount
– popular variety with useful options for export and distilling but watch yellow rust.
Diego and Duxford
good second wheats and better yellow rust resistance than Oakley.
Grafton
– good early sowing variety with good disease resistance except for brown rust. Very stiff straw.
