Wetherspoons to launch menu backing Welsh suppliers and farmers

Pub chain JD Wetherspoons is to launch a new menu in a bid to win over Welsh farmers and suppliers.

The menu will launch on Wednesday (6 September) in its 50 pubs across Wales with the emphasis on supporting local produce.

It will showcase a range of food and drink from suppliers, as well as meat from Welsh farms, including Welsh dragon sausages and Caerphilly cheese.

First Minister of Wales, Carwyn Jones, said: “I am extremely proud of Wales’ high-quality food and drink, which is enjoying a growing reputation for excellence around the world.

“It is great news Wetherspoon’s will be showcasing food and drink from suppliers right across Wales.”

Today, Mr Jones will visit the The Wyndham Arms in Bridgend to meet with some of the suppliers ahead of the menu launch and to sample a selection of products.

Wetherspoon’s general manager, Steve Edge, said: “It is a wonderful opportunity for our pubs to offer superb Welsh-produced products.”

Last year, farming union NFU Cymru launched an initiative urging shoppers to #Buy5 items of Welsh produce to support ‘real’ Welsh farm businesses, amid the fake farm brand scandal in supermarkets.

The #Buy5 campaign encourages shoppers to support real life Welsh farms and prioritise Welsh produce by buying five items of Welsh food and drink when they visit the shops, local market, farmers’ market or butcher.
