Welsh government announces relaxation of fallen stock rules
In response to the severe weather conditions, which caused heavy losses of livestock in badly affected areas of Wales, Western England and Scotland, the Chief Veterinary Officer has announced a relaxation of burial regulations in parts of Wales, allowing farmers to bury fallen animals where they lie from midnight on Tuesday.
The relaxation is set to last for seven days. Farmers will still have to contact a fallen stock collector in order to seek approval to dispose of dead animals. Newly appointed Natural Resources Minister Alun Davies said the Welsh government would also look into ways to support farmers in the longer-term.
In Scotland, the government has announced more funding for farmers facing extra costs where the snow has taken a heavy toll on animals.
