The farmer, 34 year old Roger Pion, who was arrested for possession of cannabis in July, yesterday drove a tractor over cars parked outside the County Sherriff’s office in Newport City, Vermont before making a getaway in the vehicle. There were no injuries during the bizarre incident.

A police spokesperson said officers were unaware of the damage until a neighbour called 911. As Mr Pion had crushed all seven cars, Orleans County Sheriffs and deputies were initially unable to give chase.

Police said the tractor used in the incident was owned by the suspect’s parents. Mr Pion is being held at Northern State Correctional Facility in Newport, where he will be arraigned today on 11 charges.

The farmer faces seven counts of felony unlawful mischief and one misdemeanour count of unlawful mischief on suspicion of damaging the cars as well as leaving the scene of an accident, grossly negligent operation; he also stands accused of having tried to reverse the tractor into another police cruiser after fleeing the original crime scene.

Orleans County Police said the damage to their vehicles amounts to an estimated $300,000
