United Auctions suggests possible Caledonian Marts takeover
On Wednesday, United Auctions released a statement confirming it has registered an interest in the takeover of its struggling rival Caledonian Marts. The statement was issued in response to customer enquiries at the Stirling Bull Sales, which is held by United Auctions.
Both companies are based in Stirling. Members of farmers’ co-operative Caledonian Marts met last month to develop a rescue plan to save the business, which is in debt.
In the United Auctions statement, David Leggat, Executive Chair of UA, said "Obviously, we’re interested in the situation and have many mutual customers. The process is subject to a confidentiality agreement, which we clearly want to respect."
Robin Tough, Group Joint Managing Director, added, "Our priority is to continue to focus on farmers’ requirements and to respond to changes in the market place.
“We have reviewed our sales calendar to allow back end sheep sales being held on Mondays with cattle-only sales on Wednesdays that will incorporate a prime cattle sale.
“Ultimately, we want to be prepared for all eventualities in order to service the needs of the wider farming community.”
