UK ag groups come together to form new Alliance

Seven leading agricultural businesses in the UK officially announced they would be conglomerating to form a new seed technology group. The new group will be called ‘Alliance’ and follows the takeover of Dunns seeds by Gleadell Agriculture Ltd at the end of last year.

The merger will see JE & VM Dalton Ltd, Dunns Ltd, Gleadell Ltd, H. L. Hutchinson Ltd, Pearce Seeds Ltd, Woodheads Seeds Ltd and Wynnstay Group PLC working together.

Following their announcement this morning, the companies have said they will continue to operate independently in their normal day to day businesses, but will share technological and business knowledge. The companies said in a statement today their new hub will move into the areas of plant breeding, seed multiplication, production and supply and will work with some of Europe’s leading agronomy specialists to conduct variety trials.

The new partnership will also work on new crop protection technologies for wheat, barley, OSR, maize and forage crops. The Allaince companies today said they hope their union will “bring greater agronomic and environmental benefits and will be driven by real consumer and market demand in areas such as fuel, food and the drinks markets.”

The companies involved have already worked together and seen elements of overlap and mutual interest in their businesses, and claimed their increased collaboration will benefit UK agriculture.
