Third confirmed outbreak of bird flu in Netherlands

The Dutch agriculture ministry announced on Friday that a third outbreak of bird flu has been reported on a poultry farm in Kamperveen, in the Eastern province of Overijssel.

Kamperveen is over 100 km away from the two earlier outbreaks reported in the South over the past week.

On Thursday, Dutch authorities announced that an infection of H5 strain bird flu had been detected on a poultry farm in Ter Aar. This was later revealed to be H5N8, the same strain which has been discovered on farms in Germany, England and elsewhere in the Netherlands (Hekendorp) over the past month.

H5N8 is deadly and highly infectious for birds, but poses less of a threat to humans.

Though the exact strain of bird flu in the most recent case remains unknown as yet, the Minister for Economic Affairs told the Dutch Parliament's lower house that the results of testing should be available late on Friday.

34 poultry farms in a 10km zone established around Kamperveen in light of the outbreak will be tested for the virus. None of the farms tested around the property in Ter Aar showed signs of bird flu. No farmed or wild bird tested in the vicinity of the German outbreak tested positive either.

German officials have said they are looking into other potential routes of infection, including bedding and feed.

Dutch authorities introduced a ban on transporting poultry and poultry products in response to the first outbreak.
