Syngenta workers vote for strike action
Workers at the Syngenta plant in Huddersfield have voted to strike.
86 percent of Unite members at the Swiss agribusiness’ facility in Huddersfield voted to carry out a 24 hour strike on 7th May in response to planned changes to the firm’s pension scheme. Workers held a vote on strike action after discussions with management at the plant broke down.
Syngenta said it was disappointed by the decision. A spokesperson said the company had already made concessions in debates with workers’ representatives, but added that Syngenta will continue to hold discussions with employees and union representatives.
Under the new pension scheme, workers’ pensions would be based on their earnings on 1 March 2015, no matter how many more years they continue to work for Syngenta, or how much their pay increases in this time. Trade Union Unite said that, although workers could continue to contribute to their pension under the new rules, the changes would make them thousands of pounds worse off over time.
