Spring Cattle Sale
The show and judging will take place on Tuesday 20th March at 6.00pm, the sale commences on Wednesday 21st March at 9.30am.
This Carlisle Sale is one of the major commercial Continental Cross Store Cattle sales of the year and it is expected to attract a large number of buyers, and hopefully strong prices. There will be a tremendous selection of the very best of continental cross cattle to suit large scale and specialist finishers as well as showing enthusiasts. Animals from this sale often go on to win prizes at major events throughout the UK.
It is no surprise that Harrison & Hetherington’s Sales Director Scott Donaldson, confidently expects the sale to be one of the highlights of the year: “Our spring sale is renowned country wide as one the best displays of commercial and show potential cattle. It is a showcase for the quality of cattle that is produced in Cumbria, Northumberland and the South West of Scotland. As a result of the reputation that this sale has for such high quality stock we have buyers coming from as far away the South Coast of England to the North Coast of Scotland.”
Commenting on the trends in the present market, Scott explains why it is possible that records may be broken: “Store cattle prices are at an all time high, as it is a case of supply and demand. There are fewer animals in the production system, so there is a shortage of stock to satisfy the needs of the commercial feeders and the end product for the customer.”
Entries will be in the region of 1800, and the sale has attracted stock from many notable consigners who have a loyal following and whose cattle are much sought after.
On the background to the annual Spring Sale, Scott sees an underlying pattern in the current marketplace: “In the production system generally, there are ever increasing prices within the industry. However I am keen to highlight that although the headlines suggest big wins for sellers, we are always mindful that the farmers feeding livestock also have their margins to consider, so prices need to be realistic.”
Judging the classes in the show this year is Miss Katrina Donaldson, from Huby, York.
Katrina farms with her father and they are Commercial Cattle farmers who regularly show cattle at major events. throughout the UK. Last year ‘Ruby’, a Limousin Cross heifer won the Reserve championship for the Donaldson’s at Borderway’s Agri Expo.
This season H& H are once again providing a special prize fund for cattle purchased between 1st October 2011 and 30th September 2012. If the Supreme Champion at the Borderway Agri Expo, Scottish Winter Fair, English Winter Fair and Royal Welsh Winter Fair has been purchased from any of Harrison & Hetherington’s sales centres during that period a prize of £1000 will be awarded.
