For farmers with a high spring workload to catch up on grassweed control and address the spring flush of broad leaved weeds, especially cleavers, the new recommendation offer improved efficacy and economy.

To add the recommendation to the Spitfire label, Dow AgroSciences had to gain approval from the Chemicals Regulation Directorate (CRD), this required Dow to submit detailed data on issues such as physical compatibility, crop selectivity, following crop safety and efficacy to show adding the two products together did not impair broad leaved or grassweed control. In addition, tank cleaning studies had to be undertaken to ensure no excess build up of ALS residues.

"Farmers looking to control cleavers can add 0.5L/ha of Spitfire to a contain iodosulfuron-methyl+mesosulfuron-methyl application,"  says Dow AgroSciences cereal herbicide specialist Stuart Jackson. "After frosts, the rate of Spitfire should be increased to 0.6L/ha. The florasulam part of SPITFIRE enhances activity in colder weather, thus suiting early season application.

Spitfire will also control a number of other headache weeds including volunteer beans, chickweed and brassica weeds. For added flexibility, further broad leaved weed control can be undertaken with other products such as GALAXYTM, STARANETM XL or even SPITFIRE, provide the total annual florasulam dose does not exceed 7.5g active.

The SPITFIRE label lists compatibility with iodosulfuron-methyl+mesosulfuron-methyl products including Atlantis WG, HorusTM, HatraTM, KlaxonTM, PacificaTM and OthelloTM
