With a new president at the helm, Burwarton show continues to thrive and grow, with plans for the biggest show yet for Thursday 6 August 2015.

Following in the footsteps of Rosemary, Viscountess Boyne, her son 11th Viscount Boyne was voted in as the new president of the Burwarton and District Agricultural Society.

Speaking at the Society AGM this month, Mike Bradbury, chairman of the show, commented that after 19 years as president, Rosemary, Viscountess Boyne is much loved by the whole committee for her never wavering support and gusto for our show.

“She plans to continue to support Burwarton in the coming years, and we were delighted to honour her dedication to the show over all these years with a personal gift from the society in the form of a bespoke, handmade bench, made for her by Committee member John Barnes,” he added.

“Viscount Boyne DL will bring fresh enthusiasm and ideas, and is well placed to lead the Show forward in the coming years.  We look forward to his input as our new president.”

When interviewed on his new role, Viscount Boyne said how pleased he was to take over the reins of the Society and get involved with this brilliant show. “As one day agricultural shows go, Burwarton is the best, and that is testament to the hard work and commitment that goes into organising the show.”

Looking ahead to this year’s show, on the first Thursday in August, the main ring entertainment is the Royal Signals Motorcycle Display Team – The White Helmets – supported by Bob Hogg Sheepdogs, and the usual excellent show of all things countryside and agricultural. 

During Mr Bradbury’s chairman’s report at the AGM, he highlighted the success of the 2014 show where he thanked the members, stewards, and committee for their tireless work that makes Burwarton such a success. He made a special thanks to the supportive exhibitors who return year on year.

“We were delighted to have a record number of trade stands, with a great turnout of livestock entries including cattle, sheep, pigs, and goats, all of an excellent standard. This is a vital part of our agricultural show, and something that is further growing with the success of the sheep shearing competition that is now in its second year.

“The horse section with its seven competition rings is a large draw for many riders and public alike who come to Burwarton show; it’s an area we are very proud of.”

Something that is core to the society’s ethos is its support of worthy causes. The committee made a number of charitable grants in 2014, including a donation to RABI in support of the farming community on the Somerset levels following the horrendous flooding.

Laura Edwards, from Ludlow Young Farmers was also the recipient of a charitable grant to support her discovery travels to Ghana where she assisted on a community farm and at the care centre. The meeting closed with a presentation about her trip.
