Sheep worrying portal provides advice for farmers and dog walkers

The National sheep Association has launched an online resource to provide guidance on sheep worrying and raise public awareness of the harm it can cause. The sheep association is worried that worrying may be on the increase.

The new resource is available at www.nationalsheep.org.uk/dog-owners and offers the public an insight into the problem of sheep worrying, along with practical advice on how to handle dogs when out in the countryside. The resource also includes legal information and tips for farmers to help them deal with attacks on their sheep.

In a recent NSA survey, almost two thirds of farmers polled described sheep worrying as "a persistent problem." Based on the responses of 580 farmers polled, over a third (35 percent) of dog attacks led to the death of at least one sheep.

The cost of attacks and worrying are also high – ranging between £200 and £10,000. Even incidents when sheep are chased but not attacked led to psychological impacts on the animals, leading to lower conception rates or even abortions in pregnant sheep.

Phil Stocker, NSA Chief Executive, commented, "NSA and its farmer-members want everyone to share in the iconic landscapes and beautiful countryside that sheep farming in the UK has played an integral role is creating and maintaining. Much of the UK's rural landscape is maintained by grazing sheep so there is always a strong chance you will encounter some while out with your dog.

"NSA has created this new website to help walkers and their dogs enjoy fun and safe days out without disrupting the important work of sheep farmers. It will hopefully increase understanding of sheep worrying among dog owners and ensure they are confident of their responsibilities when walking on or living near farmland."
