Royal Show set for revival at Stoneleigh
Just two years after organisers announced the last Royal Show, held at Stoneleigh Park, the local press has revealed plans to revive the 170 year old show. The show, which attracted a quarter of a million visitors in its heyday, still brought around 100,000 visitors to Stoneleigh in its final year. However, the last show was held in 2009, after falling attendance and the effects of the recession led organisers to scrap it.
Ian Pegler, who is responsible for the showground, has expressed the desire to relaunch the show, albeit slightly modernised. Mr Pegler did state that traditional elements such as livestock exhibitions, show jumping and pony riding would be retained, though he thinks the presence of celebrities such as Jamie Oliver could boost the show’s image.
Speaking to The Coventry Telegraph, He said he had been in talks over the past few months with people keen to give the Royal Show another lease of life, “I just think if the Royal Show is not as moribund but becomes exciting I can’t see why we cannot generate enough numbers.”
Mr Pegler, who is credited with revitalising the image of Little Chef, said he hoped to relaunch the summer show within the next two years, though on a smaller scale.
He said on Wednesday, “It is a no-brainer to try to revive it and modernise it. The show is a great brand but it just got far too big. I have been talking for three months to a number of people who want to back it.”
