Road Safety competition tests young farmers

Young Farmers from across England and Wales will test their road safety knowledge in the National Federation of Young Farmers’ Clubs (NFYFC) competition finals on Saturday 5 July.

Ten counties have made it through to the final of the competition that will be hosted at the Staffordshire County Showground from 10am as part of NFYFC’s Competitions Day.

Competitors aged from 17-21 will be asked to complete an online hazard perception questionnaire before carrying out practical tasks which include inspecting a car and changing a wheel.

The competition was added to the 2014 competitions programme following the launch of NFYFC’s Drive it Home road safety campaign. The campaign, which was supported by NFU Mutual, aimed to raise awareness of rural road safety and to save lives through practical and classroom based training courses.

The Drive it Home competition is one of nine competitions that will take place during the annual NFYFC Competitions Day in Staffordshire. More than 150 competitors, their friends and families will attend the event that culminates in a presentation of awards (from 3pm).

Other competitions on the day include a range of public speaking challenges, reading and speaking competitions for junior members and arts and crafts competitions – including a sewing competition and a contest where members need to show the processes involved in the production of tweed from the sheep in the field to the fabric of a garment.

Competitions Day is followed by NFYFC’s Sports Day on 6 July, where teams compete in Badminton Doubles, Touch Rugby and Rush Hockey. Sports activities have been supported by England Badminton, Rush Hockey and O2 Touch.

David Hamer, Chairman of NFYFC’s Competitions Steering Group, said, "Competitions Day is such a great opportunity to celebrate our talented young farmers. These competitions give rural young people the opportunity to learn new skills that can also be beneficial for their future careers. You don’t need to be a farmer to enter YFC competitions – they’re just a great way for our members to have fun, learn something new and, in some cases, even pick up an award!"
