RHC warns of reduced fruit crop this year

The Royal Horticultural Society has warned that the mild winter 2011/12 may result in smaller fruit crops and push up prices of fruit. Last year’s cold winter and warm spring led to a bumper British fruit crop, though some growers found they could not compete with fruit being grown overseas and imported by supermarkets; produce was left to rot on trees or in storage as supermarkets refused to take it.

According to the RHC, if there is a decline in fruit production but no change in demand fruit prices could rise. There are also fears that prematurely growing fruit plants and trees, which are responding to milder conditions, means blossoms may be killed off suddenly if the weather turns frosty.
