Response to the Climate Change Committee Progress Report
Responding to the Climate Change Committee's Progress Report, which focused particularly on woodland creation and peatland restoration and showed less progress on farming and particularly on the carbon impact of our diets:
Soil Association Head of Farming and Land Use Policy Gareth Morgan said: "In England the reinstatement of the Sustainable Farming Incentive is a priority to support farmers tackling climate change through creating carbon-rich soils, establishing trees in farmland through agroforestry, and converting to nature friendly organic farming. This will in turn underpin a steady reduction in the use of climate-damaging nitrogen fertiliser which should be paired with a long-term plan to wean ourselves off imports of both fossil-fuel based fertiliser and animal feed like soy.
"We are hopeful that the government works on its planned three key strategies on food and farming in tandem: the Farming Roadmap; the Land-Use Framework; and the Food Strategy - to enable them to plot an effective course for nature-friendly farming which will better serve our own health, nature and the environment."
