Pull a Felfie for Farming Online
Agriculture’s stereotypical old-fashioned image is about to be changed even more. The trendy ‘Selfie’, where you take a picture of yourself, which has become trendy of late, has hit farming with a bang.
Farmingselfie.com is a blog set up by Essex young farmer Will Wilson who has been collecting ‘felfies’ from around the world in order to exhibit and showcase farmers work.
The website, which has attracted interest from a range of countries including Finland, Canada, Norway, Netherlands and France, had over 2,500 views from Finland in a twenty four hour period.
And it’s not just felfies. Social media in farming has taken off rapidly of late with the introduction of #AgriChatUK on Twitter set up by four founders, one of which is rural business consultant and social media advisor, Simon Haley. The hashtag, which is set up in order to follow a certain conversation which occurs every Thursday evening’s, allows farmers to contribute on topical issues within the industry. It hit the top ten trends in October with its topic on mental health.
“The hashtag is a great way to get farmers to communicate with each other in an easy way in what is quite often a lonely industry,” Mr Haley explained.
Mr Haley also set up @FarmersoftheUK last week with Welsh sheep farmer, Gareth Wyn Jones, taking the reins for its first ever farmer host. The Twitter account aims to follow a different farmer’s life each week with the highs and lows of life on their farm.
Other farmers are joining the crusade too with a whole army of farmers tweeting and putting their message out. Jake Freestone, Overbury Farms Manager takes short clips of life on the farm, publishing them to Youtube to try and educate the consumer about food and farming.
Lincolnshire flower grower Matthew Naylor tweets about his business in the world of horticulture in the Lincolnshire Wash whilst Newcastle University’s Farm Manager, David Watson, tells his story of managing a mixed dairy, beef, sheep, pig and arable business.
You can find Farming Online @Farmingonline on both Twitter and Facebook.
Why not send us a Tweet, Facebook message or even a felfie?
