Promising EU 28 cereals estimates

Copa-Cogeca released its latest EU-28 cereals estimates for the 2014/15 marketing year on Monday. The European farm group predicts a good harvest for the EU's farmers, with production estimated 2.3 percent higher than last year's levels.

The figures were released at a Copa-Cogeca Cereals Working Party meeting yesterday. Most Member State representatives at the meeting indicated a good EU harvest estimate this year, with production forecast to reach 304.147 million tonnes.

The EU is the world's largest cereal producer. Elsewhere in the world, projections have been less promising.

Speaking at the meeting, Copa-Cogeca Working Party Chair Max Schulman from Finland highlighted the problem of the unpredictable weather conditions and pressures from yellow rust some countries are facing.

Schulman said this pressure highlights the need for a "good toolbox," including disease resistant plants, new and better varieties and better research and development.

Copa-Cogeca is also collaborating with Rabobank on a study to improve mapping of the bloc's current storage capacity and infrastructure, in order to strengthen the functioning of the European Single Market.
