Possible bird flu outbreak in Sweden
Swedish authorities are investigating a suspected case of bird flu in the country.
Government agriculture officials are investigating a potential case, which they said is likely to be of the same strain (H5N8) seen elsewhere in northern Europe in recent months.
On Friday, a spokesperson for the Swedish Agriculture Board told News Agency Reuters, “This is not really unexpected since we have had several cases in Europe during the autumn and the winter.”
The spokesperson said Swedish authorities will be releasing more information soon.
Since late last year, Northern European States including Britain, Germany and the Netherlands have experienced outbreaks of H5N8 bird flu. Though the virus is a serious threat to birds, it is not thought to pose a threat to humans.
Even so, the outbreaks in 2014 and earlier this year have led authorities to introduce strict biosecurity measures to prevent further spread.
