Pig market update: prices stable throughout EU
This week prices for mature-for-slaughter-pigs remained mostly unchanged in Europe, according to German producers’ organisation ISN. Following a period of volatility, described by ISN analysts as “distortion” in some regions, markets regained an element of stability in most European countries.
France has seen further supply reductions, though demand has remained strong, stimulated by good weather and the European Football championship. The market situation is largely similar in Spain, where producers are enjoying record returns.
In Germany, supply is also down, whilst demand is on the increase, meaning producers who were suffering the effects of the “distortion” identified by ISN researchers now have a more positive outlook. The German pork body forecast that the stability should continue into the coming weeks.
Although ISN reported export sales are on the increase, it said producers in a number of member states have complained of low revenues, especially from exports to Asia. ISN analysts put this down to the effects of a price war with producers from North and South America, vying for trade with Asian countries.
