NSA: Young sheep farmers chosen to represent the UK at European shepherding competition
Four talented and passionate young sheep farmers from across the UK have been selected by the National Sheep Association (NSA) to represent British nations at the prestigious European Shepherd of the Year competition in Paris this weekend (21st February).
The competitors will go head-to-head with Europe’s finest young shepherds in a demanding contest combining written and hands-on challenges. From breed recognition and prime lamb selection to animal health expertise, competitors will need to showcase the very best of modern shepherding skills.
Each representative has already proven their ability by winning their regional heats.
Representing England is Tom Garlick, reigning NSA Next Generation Shepherd of the Year Champion. Farming alongside his parents in Hereford, Tom is also a proud member of the NSA Next Generation Ambassadors programme.
Wales will be represented by Evan Turner, the youngest competitor in the line-up, who celebrates his 18th birthday this month. Evan earned his place after winning at NSA Welsh Sheep last May.
From Scotland, Kiera Smith of Aberdeenshire secured her spot after triumphing at NSA Highland Sheep, while Northern Ireland’s Jack Maxwell joins the team following his win at NSA Sheep NI.
NSA Technical Communications Officer Anna Wilson will be accompanying the candidates on their trip and comments: “This is a once in a lifetime opportunity and a fantastic experience for these young sheep farmers. They have already demonstrated their excellent shepherding skills and can now look forward to competing with the best young shepherds in Europe. NSA is immensely proud of their achievements and is thrilled to be able to support them throughout the trip.
“NSA must thank Pickstock Foods for its sponsorship of the UK team, allowing the competitors to benefit from what is sure to be a memorable and hugely beneficial experience.”
NSA Sheep Event will once again host the NSA Next Generation Shepherd of the Year competition on Tuesday 28th July 2026 at the Three Counties Showground, Worcestershire. Skilled young farmers from across the country will come together at the event to compete for their chance to take home the prestigious title and a share of the generous prize pot, kindly sponsored by the Texel Sheep Society.
