NSA Policy Manager Micheal Priestley says: "NSA welcomes the positive tone of the Minister's first message, and particularly his recognition of the importance of a green economy. Sheep farming is uniquely placed to help deliver the ambitions of a multi-functional land use agenda, producing sustainable food and fibre while simultaneously managing landscapes, supporting biodiversity, storing carbon and maintaining the social and economic fabric of our rural communities.

"Across the UK, sheep farmers are already delivering for nature while maintaining world-leading standards of animal welfare and producing high-quality food. At the same time, they have been adapting to life without direct payments and responding to significant policy change. The sector has demonstrated its willingness to embrace change and contribute to wider environmental goals, but it needs certainty and confidence to continue doing so."

NSA hopes the new Minister will quickly establish a strong dialogue with primary food producers and continue work to ensure the transition from the previous subsidy system to Environmental Land Management (ELM) schemes remains practical, effective and properly funded.

Mr Priestley continues: "Farmers face a range of challenges, from rising input costs and volatile markets to concerns around succession and attracting the next generation into farming careers.

"Many farmers will be seeking reassurance that government support for farming remains a priority. A stable and well-funded support framework will help ensure farm businesses are on a secure footing and able to play their full part in the green economy the Minister has spoken about. Sheep farmers deliver exceptional value for the public investment they receive through the provision of public goods including access to the countryside, improved water quality, carbon storage, biodiversity enhancement and flood mitigation."
