Helius Energy PLC  today announced that it has signed an option to lease a 20 acre site located in the Port of Southampton for the proposed construction of a 100MWe biomass fuelled power plant.

The exercise of the option to lease the site from Associated British Ports is subject to the securing of a Development Consent Order. Helius intends to submit an application for a Development Consent Order under the Planning Act 2008 for the development of the project and will shortly enter into consultation with the local community and relevant statutory authorities. The plant will contribute to the South East Plan objective of a 20% cut in carbon emissions by 2020. It will require around 700,000 tonnes of sustainably sourced biomass feedstock per annum, a significant proportion of which will come through the Port of Southampton. The site benefits from the existing port infrastructure and high quality road links. Adrian Bowles, Helius' Chief Executive Officer said: "Securing this site at Southampton for our proposed 100MWe renewable energy power plant is an important addition to our strong portfolio of sites. This is a further step on the way to delivering Helius' strategy to develop, own and operate a portfolio of biomass projects."
