New rules for bait rodenticides: are you compliant?

With the new rules on buying rodenticides due very shortly, AHDB is running two webinars explaining to arable farmers what they need to do.

After 30 September, farmers must be able to demonstrate compliance with the UK Rodenticide Stewardship requirements before they are allowed to buy and use bait rodenticides.

There are four options:

• Obtain a certificate
• Demonstrate membership of a CRRU approved farm assurance scheme such as Red Tractor or RSPCA Assured (initially until 2017)
• Employ the services of a professional pest controller
• Buy smaller packs (<1.5kg) – although these have the same active ingredient, these are classed as amateur products.

The AHDB webinars, directed at the whole farming sector, take place on Wednesday 14 September 7-8pm and Thursday 15 September 7-8pm. To take part in the webinar, register now, or watch the recording afterwards.

A rodenticide hub has been funded by AHDB and developed in partnership with other industry organisations including British Poultry Council, NFU and NFUS.

Gaining the qualification will help farmers and growers make efficient use of rodenticides which in the long term will mean cost savings.

The hub includes a downloadable PDF guide from AHDB to effective and responsible use of rodenticide bait. The guide is another alternative route to build the knowledge required for farmer certification. This website links to the online exam which results in a certificate of competence administered by Lantra at a cost of £55.
