Independent awarding body, BASIS, has launched a new training course 'Certificate in Greenhouse Gases, Carbon and Climate Change Mitigation' to support the farming sector in developing understanding of greenhouse gases and carbon in relation to climate change and to provide the tools and practices to achieve a reduction in emissions.

Teresa Meadows, BASIS Head of Environment, says that this is the first course in the industry to bring together this topic into a practical, applied training course for the agricultural sector.

"Agriculture contributes to climate change, is affected by climate change and has a real potential to be a part of the solution to climate change", she says.

"This course will be invaluable for advisers working in the sector, those across the supply chain and for farmers and landowners that are keen to fully understand emissions and the opportunities for a reduction in emissions that are often coupled with farm productivity improvements and efficiency gains". 

This five-day course delivered through the BASIS Approved Trainer network enables farmers, land managers, agronomists and advisers to better understand the role of emissions and the opportunities for the removal of carbon within agricultural systems, and further their technical and practical knowledge of the following concepts:

• Climate change policy and legislation
• Emissions and impacts
• Carbon sequestration and storage
• Assessing greenhouse gases – modelling and footprinting
• On-farm mitigation measures and practices
• Carbon credits and markets, including the production and trading of credits
