Morrisons raises in-stores prices to benefit farmers

Morrisons is increasing the price of milk, the supermarket announced on Monday. The price rise will translate into increased returns for farmers supplying their milk, according to the retailer.

From Monday, the price of Morrisons’ Standard 4 pint carton will increase from 89p to £1, whilst its Milk for Farmers 4 pint carton will rise from £1.12 to £1.23. The supermarket, one of the UK’s Big Four, attracted criticism and saw its processing plants blockaded after it cut the price of its four litre carton from £1 down to 89p in June.

The NFU welcomed the move on Monday. Dairy board chair Rob Harrison said, “Today's announcement by Morrisons is good news and moved them up the table in the support they provide farmers. However, there are still a few retailers languishing behind on the support they provide to guarantee high quality British dairy products every day of the year.

NFU President Meurig Raymond added, “We welcome this latest move by Morrisons which recognises the need to increase the sustainable price back to farm, at this difficult time.  The Morrisons ‘Milk for Farmers’ range allows consumers the choice of how to show support for the industry.

“We now need to ensure that farmers supplying milk for all dairy products are treated fairly during this difficult market situation.”
