Morrisons joins cage-free egg pledges

Echoing commitments from Tesco, Aldi, Iceland and French catering giant Sodexo, Bradford-based Morrisons, one of the UK’s ‘Big Four’ supermarkets announced that it will source only free-range eggs or eggs from barn systems by 2025.

On Tuesday, a Morrisons spokesperson said, ”We have been listening hard to our customers about eggs from caged hens. Today we are making a commitment that by 2025 all our eggs will be from non-caged hens."

Phillip Lymbery, CEO of farm animal welfare charity Compassion in World Farming, welcomed the announcement by Morrisons on Tuesday, saying that the recent flurry of supermarkets making commitments on egg sourcing have come on the heels of similar announcements from major retailers across the Atlantic, including most prominently the world’s largest supermarket chain, Walmart.

In the UK, Sainsbury’s, Co-op, Waitrose and Marks and Spencer have already dropped eggs from caged birds.
