Monsanto discussing another Syngenta bid

Executives at seed giant Monsanto have confirmed that the company is still considering making takeover bids for agchem competitors, and could possibly approach Swiss competitor Syngenta.

The news comes less than two months after Monsanto execs stated that the company is no longer pursuing its Swiss rival.

According to Bloomberg, Missouri-based Monsanto (the world’s largest seed company and GM crop patent-holder) is considering renewing its takeover bid, after China’s National Chemical Corp. made a bid for Basel-based Syngenta (the world’s leading pesticide manufacturer).

Monsanto’s Chief Operating Officer Brett Begemann told reporters in St Louis, where Monsanto’s headquarters is located, that the company is weighing up the merits of another offer. He refused to comment on whether these considerations have moved any further than internal discussions.

Syngenta turned down interest from Monsanto in 2014 and rebuffed repeated offers earlier this year, but former Syngenta CEO Mike Mack stepped down at the end of last month, reportedly due to pressure stemming in part from dissatisfaction over the handling of Monsanto’s overtures; Syngenta’s latest rebuff in August led the company’s share price to tumble.

On Tuesday, Monsanto’s Begemann said the company is on track to reach its growth targets and double its earnings to more than $10 a share by 2019.

Campaigners have expressed concerns about the takeover bid, which they maintain would violate anti-trust rules, putting the ‘mega-corp’ resulting from a merger in a ‘near monopoly’ position over the world food system.
