Milk protests continue in Midlands

Farmers for Action led the third in a string of recent protests at a Dairy Crest site in Foston, Derbyshire on Monday night.

The blockade at Foston follows similar actions at Bridgewater in Somerset and Market Drayton in Shropshire and was called in response to Dairy Crest's third consecutive price cut, which was announced at the beginning of the month. The 1.3 pence per litre cut will come into effect in November.

Milk buyers have blamed price cuts on the "situation in global commodity markets," though FFA maintains that cuts inflicted on farmers over a period of months are unjustified.

The group said in a statement on its website that the protests are beginning to yield promising results. A FFA spokesperson said, "We need to intensify the protests, if we are to stop any further price cuts and start to get farmgate prices up as fast as they went down."

FFA has promised further action on Tuesday evening, and announced plans to meet at a Cooperative-owned site in Hampshire.
