Farming Online launches weather-driven pod shatter risk forecast for UK oilseed rape growers

Farming Online has launched a new pod shatter risk forecast to help UK oilseed rape growers anticipate when ripe crops are most vulnerable to seed loss — one of the most costly and hardest-to-predict problems at harvest.

Pod shatter happens when mature pods split and shed seed before or during combining. Losses can be significant, and the risk is notoriously difficult to time because it builds gradually with the weather rather than arriving on a single day. The new forecast is designed to give growers a simple, science-based heads-up so they can prioritise which fields to watch and when to harvest.

Rather than reacting to one day's conditions, the model tracks how the weather has been behaving in the run-up to each day. Repeated wet-then-dry spells gradually make pods brittle, and it is this build-up — combined with dry, gusty conditions on the day itself — that sets off shattering. The forecast brings those two factors together and rates each day simply as High, Medium or Low risk, across a short rolling outlook.

The approach is grounded in peer-reviewed research on how oilseed rape pods weaken and split, and draws its weather data for each grower's location. The service runs through the UK's main shatter-risk window, from late June to late July, and is delivered directly to growers via Farming Online's Weather Forecast.

The forecast is intended as a practical risk indicator to support decision-making, not a guarantee of crop behaviour, and complements growers' own judgement and agronomic advice.
