Market Roundup: Cattle prices remain unchanged
Deadweight cattle prices remained somewhat unchanged last week with the overall prime cattle average price levelling at 346.6p/kg, a 14p/kg uplift since the turn of the year according the latest report from the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB).
Any upward lift in prices is unlikely as reports suggest processors are pretty well stocked. Previous short supplies of prime cattle are likely to take effect towards Christmas where producers could see a rise in prices.
According to the AHDB report, throughputs were back 5% on the year standing at 32,700 head.
In the live weight cattle markets, prices also levelled last week as supply also met demand. Continental cross 18 month old steers averaged almost £940 per head, while Hereford cross
steers of the same age were £760 per head, both 8% up on the year.
At Hexham Auction Mart, Limousin store cattle went to £1240 for cattle in the 23-30 months bracket while younger cattle in the 17-22 months bracket went to £1220 (Charolais steers) and £1260 (Limousin steers). Heifers also met a good trade with Charolais going to £1100, Limousin to £1180 and British Blonde’s to £1240.
Profitability of store and finishing cattle will remain dependant on producers keeping costs especially as cereal prices remain fairly strong.
