Market Report: Prices beef up ahead of Christmas

Following Farming Online’s last report, deadweight cattle prices strengthened on the week according to today’s (19 October) data from the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB) regarding trade in the week ending 13 October and 17 October.

In the first week, while slaughtering’s were marginally up on the year, tight supplies continued to put upward pressure on prices as procurement for pre-Christmas demand starts once again.

Price rises are likely to be continued into the next few weeks as processors look to procure more beef for the Christmas trade.

Live weight prices also saw an increase with all classes of cattle dearer than the previous week (week ending 17 October). Prime cattle average price increased a penny to 187.1p/kg as a result of increased demand ahead of the Christmas period.

At Louth Livestock Market on 11th October store cattle averaged £798.21 for steers and £738.79 for heifers with prices topping at £1287 for a steer and £955 for a heifer. Medium sized fat cattle averaged 206.50 p/kg equating to £1141.95.
