Farming News - Mansel Raymond re-elected European milk chairman

Mansel Raymond re-elected European milk chairman

European dairy farmers have today given their full support to Welsh dairy farmer Mansel Raymond to lead dairy discussions in Brussels for the next two years.

Re-elected Copa Dairy Chair, Mr Raymond will continue to represent the dairy interests of the European farm organisation which brings together over 60 farming unions.

Speaking after his election, Mr Raymond said, "It’s going to be a difficult few months for dairy, but I remain convinced that the long term future for dairy is positive. I thank my fellow European colleagues for giving me their full support today and I will work towards ensuring we have a profitable and sustainable EU dairy sector – together we can be stronger in finding solutions such as addressing market volatility, better market monitoring and improved milk package implementation."

NFU dairy board chair Rob Harrison said it was vital that we had a strong voice in Europe, especially at this difficult time for the dairy sector. "The NFU Dairy Board fully supports Mansel Raymond’s continuation in the role of Copa Milk Chairman and we will be working closely with him to raise the UK’s points on intervention, promotion and increasing the bargaining power of farmers," Harrison said.

"At the Copa meeting today it’s clear that the same issues are impacting on farmers across Europe but the proposed solutions are varied – in that respect we need a clear, strong Copa position to present to the Commission, Parliament and Council."

Mr Raymond will be supported by two Vice Chairs – Tommaso Mario Abrate from Italy and Thierry Roquefeuil from France.
