Lincolnshire farmer jailed after neglecting pigs, cattle

A Lincolnshire farmer who grossly neglected cattle and pigs on his farm was charged today at Lincoln Magistrate’s Court.

Andrew Wells, of Pepperdale Farm, Waddingham, claimed he fell behind in his work and began neglecting animals on the farm after being jilted. He stopped supplying animals with feed and drinking water and left them in fields with dangerous material including bricks, wire and decaying carcasses strewn about.

Wells pleaded guilty to a total of 42 charges, including 16 animal welfare offences, 12 counts of failure to comply with animal by-product regulations and 14 counts of failure to record cattle movements, births and deaths.

Trading standards were called to Pepperdale farm in November last year following a complaint from a member of the public. However, it took a number of visits between that time and June this year, when animals were found in a state of starvation, before any action was taken.

The farmer was given a total of one year in prison for the numerous counts of neglect and failure to record movements, births and deaths. He was disqualified from keeping and working with animals for five years.
