LG Beowulf is earning its place on UK farms
As the 2025 harvest rolls on, growers are beginning to reflect on this year's results are starting to plan for the season ahead. One variety which has been popular with growers is LG Beowulf, which Wynnstay has selected as a wheat variety with exceptional potential on farm, offering consistently high yields, excellent straw value and strong agronomic resilience.
"Yield matters, but it's just one part of the picture," explains Joe Wood, seed sales manager at Wynnstay. "Beowulf has proven itself to be a reliable, well-rounded option that fits a wide range of farming systems, from mixed to arable, across the UK."
With excellent yields in all regions and a notably high untreated yield, Beowulf has shown strong performance even under more challenging seasonal conditions. Its reliability is a key advantage for growers looking for dependable returns.
Straw remains a valuable bi-product of grain production and Beowulf delivers here too; as a medium-tall, well-tillering plant, it provides excellent straw volumes with strong lodging resistance, both with and without the use of growth regulators.
"For many farms, straw is no longer just a by-product, it's a legitimate focus when selecting which variety to grow. Beowulf gives growers peace of mind on that front."
Despite its high yield potential, Beowulf also maintains a respectable specific weight, making it attractive both for growers marketing into the feed sector and those rolling grain for use on farm.
"There's often a trade-off between yield and grain quality, but Beowulf removes that," says Joe. "It produces bold grain that feeds well and sells well.
"For harvest 2025, we're anticipating a decent result. Growers have commented positively on ear size and grain fill, and on heavier ground, the straw is looking healthy and strong."
Recent seasons have demonstrated the unpredictable nature of disease pressure, with septoria and rusts continuing to pose challenges," he adds. "Beowulf offers a robust disease resistance profile, helping reduce pressure on spray programs and giving growers extra insurance.
"We're seeing increased focus on the genetic tools within varieties to help manage crop protection spend, and Beowulf gives growers a good platform to work from." Joe believes now is the ideal time for growers to secure seed, as he predicts Beowulf will be incredibly popular this season. "I can see it being widely sown," he says. "Once growers see how it performs, demand is only going to increase."
