Is Tesco still meeting its post-horsegate meat commitments?

The National Pig Association (NPA), which has mounted a campaign to encourage supermarkets to stock British pork products, has said Tesco is slipping in its meat sourcing commitments, made in the wake of the horse meat scandal.

Tesco was one of the first large companies implicated in the meat adulteration scandal, which erupted in early 2013. In response to the scandal, Tesco took out full page advertisements in national newspapers apologising to its customers and pledged to stop more British meat.

Reporting on its PorkWatch campaign, NPA said that Tesco is stocking less sausages, bacon, ham and fresh pork from Britain in November compared to compared to the last report in September. The findings come at a time of falling farm gate prices, which mean producers need the business of large retailers like Tesco more than ever.

The campaign shows that ‘Big Four’ supermarkets including Tesco and Asda have been overtaken by discounters like Lidl and Aldi in their procurement policies.

More information from the campaign, which looks at retailers’ sourcing policies and in-store promotions, is available from the NPA here.
