Stuart Sampson, EA Drought Manager, said:

"Water resources have recovered well after last year's drought, with groundwater, reservoirs and river flows in a much stronger position following a wet winter.  However, April has been particularly dry in parts of central, eastern and southeast England, and some areas are already seeing below normal river levels for the time of year. As a result, irrigation prospects for this spring and summer are currently classed as good for most of the country, but vary between good and moderate in the east.

"With an early start to the irrigation season, we are encouraging farmers and growers to take early action to manage their water use carefully and plan ahead. Spring is a good time to check equipment is working and if there any leaks from pipes, these should be repaired quickly, so farmers are ready for the irrigation season.

"By working together and taking steps now to use water efficiently and build resilience, we can help protect supplies for farming, the environment and wildlife throughout the season."
