Intercropping can boost yields and reduce inputs in the UK

Nuffield Scholar Andrew Howard last week published his research into companion cropping on arable farms.

The research shows that companion cropping and intercropping have the potential to produce up to 30% more crop yield while allowing for a reduction of off-farm inputs. The conclusions are the result of fact finding trips to the USA and Canada, South Africa and a number of European countries, including France where some of Europe’s first commercial companion crops for quite some time have been developed.
